Rome Concrete Step Light | Abner Lighting

Rome is a concrete step light for outdoor stairs, terraces and garden walls. Subtle, low-glare light that makes every level safer after dark.

Rome Concrete Step Light

Stairs are where outdoor lighting truly earns its keep. One missed step in the dark is all it takes to turn a beautiful terrace into a hazard. Rome is a concrete step light designed to make every level visible after sunset, while keeping the architecture unchanged and uncluttered.

Placed on stair risers, low walls or planter edges, Rome casts light across treads and walkways at foot level. It shows people exactly where to put their feet, without shining into their eyes or calling attention to itself. The result is a staircase that feels safe to walk at midnight and still looks considered when you step back to admire the whole facade.

A Step Light That Belongs to the Architecture

Most step lights are small metal boxes that end up looking like an afterthought. Rome takes a different view. Made from real concrete, it shares its material with the walls, steps and plinths around it, so it reads as part of the build rather than something added at the end. On a board-formed concrete staircase, a stone-clad garden wall or a plastered parapet, it blends in by day and gets on with its work at night.

Where to Use Rome

  • Outdoor staircases connecting terraces, podiums and gardens
  • Entrance steps leading up to the main door
  • Pool decks and sunken seating areas, where level changes are easy to miss
  • Garden walls and raised planters that line a path
  • Hotel, restaurant and clubhouse exteriors where guests move around in low light

In short, anywhere the ground changes level, a well-placed step light makes the space safer and more comfortable to use.

Why Low-Level Light Feels Better

There is a reason good hotels light their stairs from below rather than from a pole overhead. Low-level light keeps the source out of your line of sight, so your eyes stay adjusted to the dark and the view of the garden or skyline is not washed out. It also creates soft pools on the ground that give an outdoor space depth and rhythm. Rome follows the same thinking: the light is for the step, not for the sky.

Built for Outdoor Life in India

Steps take a beating. They are hosed down, swept, splashed and baked in the sun day after day. Concrete handles that routine far better than painted metal, which chips and corrodes, or plastic, which fades and turns brittle. Rome is developed in-house by Abner's team with Indian weather in mind, so it can see through monsoons and long summers without looking tired. With age, its surface picks up a gentle patina, just like the concrete and stone around it.

Planning Your Step Lighting

Some practical guidance before you start:

  • Some practical guidance before you start:
  • Position fixtures so light falls onto the tread rather than straight across the stair.
  • On wide staircases, consider fixtures on both sides so light reaches the full width.
  • Involve your architect or contractor early. Step lights are best planned before walls and risers are finished.

Send us your drawings and our team will help you work out positions and quantities.

Part of the Abner Concrete Series

Rome sits within Abner's Concrete series, alongside the Medan concrete bollard light and our concrete wall lights. Together, they let you light an entire exterior, from garden path to staircase to facade, in one consistent material and design language.

 Frequently Asked Questions

How many step lights do I need?

It depends on the width and length of your staircase and the mood you want. One fixture per step or one on every alternate step are both common approaches. Our team can recommend a layout for your space.

Can Rome be used on indoor stairs?

Rome is designed mainly for exteriors, but its concrete finish also suits interiors with a minimal or industrial character, such as courtyards and atriums. Check with our team for indoor installations.
